What Is Sedentary Behavior?

In the field of sports medicine, sedentary behavior is defined as activities with a motor density of less than 15METs or burns heat less than 15 Kcal per hour. For instance, sleeping in bed, long hours sitting on the chair taking exams or playing computer games and long hours lying on the sofa watching movies, driving a car, these all belong to sedentary behavior.

What Are The Dangers of Sedentary Behavior?

In 1990, an article published on the American Medical Association by scientists from the U.S. Disease Control and Prevention pointed out that lack of regular exercise has led to 2.56 million deaths in the United States alone. In 2002, World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that about 2 million people died prematurely that year due to lack of exercise.

Sedentary behavior can cause many diseases

What’s more, sedentary behavior also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Taking ‘watch television’ as an example - a study by scientists at the University of Cambridge found that each additional hour of television viewing was associated with a 7% increase in the risk of cardiovascular death and a 4% increase in the overall risk of death.

In terms of cancer, in 2017, a 30,000-participant study conducted in Sweden showed that the risk of breast cancer before menopause increased by 20 percent for women who engaged in prolonged sedentary behaviors due to occupational demands compared to those who don’t have a sedentary lifestyle. The risk of breast cancer before menopause increases by 20% for women who have prolonged sedentary lifestyle compared to those who don’t live this way, and by up to 54 % for those who are less than 55 years old.

In addition to cardiovascular disease and cancer, static behavior is also associated with overall population mortality. In 2015, a study published by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the elderly were tracked by cohort and year, and those who watched television for 5 hours or more per day had a 45% increased risk of death, 28% higher. The risk of death increased by 45% for those who watched 5 hours or more of television per day, and was 28% higher than the risk of death for those who watched 3 hours per day.
